 FAQs

  • Character Development is a form of learning, accepting, and displaying qualities and traits. Learning how to use the positive traits in all settings. Also allowing the negative traits to be targeted, controlled and with work, eliminated. In other words, awareness, all the time.

  • We are currently offering services in the following counties:

    • Allegheny

    • Beaver

    • Westmoreland

  • The price depends on the structure of our services. To determine the cost, we will have an initial discussion to understand the needs.

  • Our process is simple and easy and will consist of the following:

    1. Submit an interest form: this includes contact information, service needed, expected start date, and duration.

    2. Schedule a time to meet: we will meet by phone or Zoom to understand the request and coordinate the next steps of the process

    3. Review goal plan: POI will create a plan based on the information discussed and confirm your commitment to proceed

    4. Sign commitment letter: this will serve as our commitment to each other to pursue the goals agreed to during this engagement.

    5. Review progress: this occurs during our engagement and will be provided on a regular basis to ensure we are making measurable progress towards our goals.

  • Character Development is the longest internal curriculum. It can never truly be mastered. Only shaped, strengthened, weakened or stagnant. However, no one person has another’s version. It’s yours, and no one else. No matter the situation, setting or state of mind. Your character is yours. Let’s work on it.

What are others saying?

  • Throughout our time working with my foster son together, I was able to get acquainted with BJ, I had observed a lot of character building skills and how he works very well with teenagers and adults alike. His mannerisms and communication go above and beyond the average therapist. I know that he is highly educated as well as experienced with working with troubled teens. The more I got to know BJ the more impressed I was with his talent in characterization. He is resourceful, insightful and beneficial. He would be a valuable asset to your team. I wholeheartedly recommend Bernard Tench without reservation.

  • It was my privilege and honor to work alongside BJ Tench while I was working as a school social worker and counselor within the Pittsburgh public school district. I worked with BJ while working as a school counselor at Clayton Academy, which is an alternative school for providing education and services to high risk students who were removed from their home schools Into a highly structured environment. Many of the students had experienced extremely challenging home and environmental challenges and had a need for a lot of support in developing life skills, coping skills and empowerment skills. BJ successfully provided ongoing groups and individual support to address all of those needs. The students connected easily with him and were able to engage in constructive dialogue and problem-solving, in spite of the fact that was often not easy for them. BJ provided a safe and respectful place, was an incredible role model, and could meet each student where they were and show them other ways of coping in the world.

  • Bernard has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to guiding young people with life skills, leadership, and a strong sense of professionalism. He has done great work mentoring at the Salvation Army with Reaching Back as well as in East Allegheny High School. Bernard possesses a natural ability to connect with youth from diverse backgrounds, helping them navigate real-world challenges with confidence and clarity. Whether he’s leading workshops, offering one-on-one support, or simply serving as a positive role model, Bernard instills values of discipline, respect, and personal responsibility. His mentorship goes beyond instruction—he genuinely listens, encourages, and empowers young individuals to reach their full potential.

    Reaching Back Staff

  • Growing up without a father, I lacked many of the foundational life lessons that most young men receive at home. BJ stepped into that role—not just as a mentor, but as a spiritual father figure. He taught me how to live with integrity, how to lead with humility, and most importantly, how to walk with God. Through countless hours of personal investment, he guided me through some of the most formative years of my life, modeling what it means to be a man of character, discipline, and vision. BJ’s leadership goes far beyond words. He leads by example, demonstrating unwavering integrity in all that he does. His ability to teach life skills in a relatable and practical way has been instrumental in my development—both personally and professionally. He has an incredible gift for connecting with people, earning trust through authenticity and consistency. His wisdom, patience, and encouragement have equipped me to pursue my own goals, including embarking on a business venture, with confidence and clarity. As someone who has benefited firsthand from BJ’s mentorship for over a decade, I can say without reservation that he brings not only a wealth of knowledge and leadership, but also a rare depth of character that inspires others to rise higher.
